ISOLATION SYSTEM

Health care often faces situations in which patients need to be isolated unexpectedly. For example a patient with a (suspected) MRSA infection. Such a situation can cause a sudden shortage of isolation capacity, at the moment when it really matters. In such situations it is very important to act quickly and prevent the spreading of the infection. IMG Europe developed a patented technology that offers a flexible, quick and effective solution to create an isolation room: The Barrier2000.

BARRIER2000

The Barrier2000 is a flexible isolation lock that enables the effortless creation of a barrier between a clean room and a contaminated room. Thanks to the flexibility of the system, the Barrier2000 can be placed very quickly in the ward in which the contaminated patient is nursed. The system is capable of generating negative pressure in rooms of different sizes. This way, extra isolation capacity can be generated instantly and the risk of an outbreak is reduced.

The Barrier2000 consists of three parts: a disposable isolation lock, a ventilation unit for the isolation lock and a ventilation unit for the contaminated room. These parts can be placed in different positions, allowing the easy adaptation of the Barrier2000 to every situation.

Strict isolation is applied to prevent an infection in a room to leave that room. The disposable Barrier2000 isolation lock is placed in front of the entrance of the contaminated patient’s room. This way it functions as an isolation lock. The ventilation system generates a negative pressure of 7,5 Pa in the lock and cleans the air through G4 and Hepa13 filters. The channel for outgoing air in the patient’s room is closed and ventilation is taken over by the Barrier2000 ventilation system, which create a negative pressure of 15 Pa. Both fans are operated by a control panel, which records the actual pressure and, if desired, sounds an alarm if the pressure falls below or rises above the ventilation limit

The Barrier2000 can be applied in patient’s rooms that do have an isolation lock, but are not equipped with a ventilation system for the correct pressure conditions. The channel for outgoing air in the patient’s room is closed. The Barrier2000 takes over the ventilation to create a negative pressure of 15 Pa in the room and a negative pressure of 7,5 Pa in the lock. The control panel guards the pressure and offers the possibility to remotely adjust the pressure conditions. The mobile ventilation unit can be replaced by a built-in wall model.

In some situations a patient or room must be protected against contamination from the outside. This is achieved by means of positive pressure. The Barrier2000 isolation lock is placed in front of the entrance of the patient’s room. The ventilation system creates a positive pressure of 7,5 Pa in the isolation lock. The incoming air is cleaned with G4 and Hepa13 filters. In the patient’s room the channel for incoming air is closed and ventilation is taken over by the Barrier2000 ventilation system. This will create a positive pressure of 15 Pa in the room. The control panel allows the control of both fans and management of the actual pressure.

In addition to the examples mentioned, the Barrier2000 isolation system or parts of it can be used as a flexible solution for many other situations. For example when an entire department needs to be converted into an isolation facility (cohort isolation) or for strict isolation with a (semi) permanent partition wall. The system can function as a supplement for an existing fixed system. The Barrier2000 is also useful in renovations and during maintenance, to prevent dust and molds from spreading.
